"Estar en el paro" means to be unemployed.
"Paro" may be translated as "strike" sometimes, but it is usually said "huelga".

Hi:
Paro and Huelga are the same, that means strike, unemployment.

"Estar en el paro" is to be unemployed.
"Estar en huelga" is to be on strike.

In certain contexts "paro" y huelga" can be synonyms, but not always.

Perhaps is different everywhere but "paro" to my understanding means strike. At least where I come from. "paro laboral"

paro (m)
n. stoppage, shutdown; standstill; arrest; strike

I would used estoy parado(stopped) to mean I'm unemployed.
unemployed
desempleado, parado, desocupado, sin trabajo
